U19 SoCal CHAMPIONS!

The U19 Mustangs completed an undefeated season with a 17-12 victory over Back Bay Rugby Club on Saturday afternoon at Cal State Fullerton, capturing the Southern California championship.  The win made it 12 straight for the Mustangs.

The tone of the match was set from the opening kickoff.  Mustang kicker and standout prop David Lederer sent the opening kick deep, and Back Bay immediately revealed their strategy of picking and jamming.  Although outweighed by 40 pounds per man, the Mustangs met the challenge, led by sure tackling hooker, Ryan Hoffman, and always active flanker, Jonathon Raby.

The Mustangs backs were similarly outsized, but courageously launched repeated attacks at the Back Bay defense.  Brian Hollenbeck, the Mustangs flyhalf, along with centers Lucas Zender and Billy Maggs, the high school All-American from Torrey Pines, absorbed hit after hit.  The defensive first half ended in a 5-5 tie, both sides scoring one try.

The Mustangs got the wind for the second half, but an early mishandled pass led to a turnover and try for Back Bay, awakening their boisterous fans.  The Mustangs answered back with an unconverted try to standout player Brian Hollenbeck to make the score 12-10 to Back Bay.  As the clock ticked down to five minutes, the Mustangs got the break they needed with the fullback Bryce Hageman burst through the line, stepping one defender, and outrunning the other from forty meters to the goalposts for the try converted by Jess Krauss.

With little time remaining Back Bay fought back with fury.  Mustang captain Brent Sander rallied his troops to defend the counter-attack with equal vigor.  With a complete team effort the Mustangs managed to hold out Back Bay and claim the Southern California championship with a 17-12 victory.

Two Mustangs make All-American

From USA Rugby website:
H.S. All-Americans switch to 15s for Wellington College Tournament

LONDON -- The USA Rugby High School All-Americans will compete in the Wellington College tournament this week with their first match taking place on April 7, 2012 in Crowthorne, U.K. a town about an hour outside of London.  All-Americans Head Coach Salty Thompson has named a young touring squad, giving the Under-17s players a chance to take on some of Europe's best.

Last week the HSAAs entered a sevens team into the HSBC Rosslyn Park Sevens tournament and swept the first day winning five straight games.  Day two saw the team fall to Welsh powerhouse Llandovery College, but the skills and athleticism of the HSAAs caught the attention of an international audience, setting the bar high for the fifteens team.

The team will train at Wellington College during the week in preparation for their first match of the tournament on April 7 against Wales Under-16s.  Following the Wales match, the team will play England North Under-16s on April 10 and finish off the tournament on April 13 when they play Belgium's Under-17s.

The Wellington tournament is a great chance for the best rugby players in the U.S. to experience an international competition and square off with some of the rising stars in Europe.  Gaining match experience and training in a high performance environment is vital not only to the development of the High School All-Americans themselves, but to the future of the senior national teams.

Thompson is committed to the on-field development as much as he is the off-field development of the young men on the team, recognizing that the tournament will be an experience the players will never forget and hopes the athletes will take away great rugby and life lessons from the tournament.

Following the U.K. tour, the All-Americans will assemble in July for a five-day camp and head to South America for a three-week tour where they will play five matches against Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina.

"Stand Up For Epilepsy" (SUFE) Project
posted 03/27/2012

Epilepsy is the most common serious disorder of the brain and affects about 1% of the world population in each age group, from infants to the elderly, with a higher incidence in children. In the world there are approximately 70 million people living with epilepsy.

The European Parliament has recently adopted a Written Declaration acknowledging the high social impact of epilepsy, while the member states of the Pan American Health Organization have approved a strategy for the creation of national programs for the care and treatment of epilepsy.

In many cases epilepsy can be effectively treated with appropriate medicines, although about one third of people affected continue to suffer from seizures in spite of treatment. A major cause for a reduced quality of life of people with epilepsy is the prejudice that comes with the disease, mostly due to ignorance about its nature. This prejudice is ubiquitous, but most marked in developing countries and against children. Because of prejudice, people with epilepsy are often discriminated against at school on in the workplace, and they may be denied basic rights, including the ability to be actively engaged in sports.

For many years the international associations representing the health professionals (ILAE, International League Against Epilepsy) and patients’ organizations (IBE, International Bureau for Epilepsy) have been fighting against such prejudice by promoting several anti-discrimination campaigns.

ILAE, through its Task Force on Sports and Epilepsy and in collaboration with IBE, is now launching a new exciting and innovative project that will involve famous personalities from the world of sport. The aim is to create a collection of images of famous sport persons willing to be photographed with children or teenagers with epilepsy. The photographs will convey the message that celebrities have no prejudice against the disease and that people with epilepsy can achieve their goals, lead a full and active life and engage in sports.

This collection of images will be presented at the London European Epilepsy Congress in 2012 and used on a totally non-profit basis for promotional campaigns wordwide to eradicate prejudice and discrimination against epilepsy.

2012 U8 Back Bay Champions!

The U8 Mustangs ended the season with a thrilling championship run at the Annual Back Bay Youth Rugby Tournament.  The Mustangs beat host Back Bay in the first game of pool play, followed by a win against South Bay.

The Semifinal game was against our rival San Clemente, but the Mustangs came out strong and took the victory.  In the Final, the Mustangs played against the Rising Eagles from Granada Hills.  The game was close to the final whistle, but our boys hung on for the win!

This was the first tournament win in the history of the U8 Mustangs!  After losing a heartbreaker to San Clemente in the finals of the Olympic Sevens earlier in the season, this was a great way to end the season.
