The U14’s returned home yesterday after earning a perfect record on their tour of Ireland! The boys started off in Dublin where they opened the tour with a strong victory over Wanderers FC, winning 52-12.
After a few days in the Irish capital, the team traveled west to County Galway where they faced Monivea RFC, the Connacht U14 Champions and a team that hadn’t been beaten by an American side in over 40 years (if ever). The Mustangs easily dispatched the western champions with a strong 52-19 victory.
After the match the team took to sightseeing, this time on the beautiful western coast of Ireland, touring the famous Cliffs of Moher before heading to arguably the most enjoyed part of the trip, a tour of the Aran Islands. Some of the players rode bikes around the island while others resorted to walking or tahorse-drawn buggies. From ruined castles, to a 1960s shipwreck, to the beautiful wind-swept landscape, it was the perfect break from the organized chaos on the pitch!
The Mustangs consequently moved from the west to the north, heading to Northern Ireland for some sightseeing around Belfast and their final match of the tour against City of Derry RFC. The boys earned their third consecutive match victory to seal the perfect record!
As was expected, the post-match hospitality was fantastic. The Wanderers put together a great chicken curry meal while Derry graciously took us in. Monivea’s hospitality, however, stole the show as both teams‘ players sat together and ate, talked, and burst into song throughout the meal!
This tour to Ireland was a rousing success, especially for our first ever Mustangs international tour. We cannot wait to replicate this success in the future!
